WestCycle Campaign 2026

Make the Path
Network Work
for Everyone

Western Australia's shared path network has grown significantly but for many riders it still falls short of being truly usable. Long stretches without shade, lighting, rest areas or basic amenities mean paths exclude the very people active transport should serve best.

Shade & Heat
01

Riding in the Heat is a Health Risk

As Perth's urban heat islands intensify, exposed paths are becoming genuinely dangerous during summer. Heat stroke risk is real, disproportionately affecting older riders, children, and people with health conditions.

Lighting
02

Dark Paths Are Unsafe Paths

New PSP standards include lighting but there is no program to install lighting on existing paths, even when they are being resurfaced. This is a missed opportunity and a safety issue.

Rest Stops Make Paths Accessible to Everyone

Benches, shelters and rest stops make paths usable for older riders, people with disabilities, families, and anyone returning to cycling after a break.

Toilets & Drinking Water Shouldn't Be a Luxury

Long gaps between facilities are a real barrier to longer rides. Use the map below to see for yourself where the gaps are in Perth's path network.

What We're Asking For

📋

Update the PSP Standards

Update the Principal Shared Path standards and guidelines (MRWA and DTMI) to include shade, lighting, rest areas, toilets and drinking water as standard requirements.

🔧

Fund a Retrofit Program

Create a dedicated program to bring existing paths up to standard - not just new paths. The network we have now should work for everyone.

🚧

Upgrades Include Amenities

When paths are resurfaced or upgraded, lighting and amenities must be included as part of the works - not treated as optional extras to be value-engineered out.

🛠️

Ongoing Maintenance Funding

Amenities only work if they are maintained. Dedicated ongoing funding is needed to keep infrastructure functional and safe.

Support the campaign and help us make the case for better paths for everyone in Western Australia.
